Physics 241
Final Exam Blue Print
Date: Thursday,
December 13, 9:00 am S201
Duration: 2.5 hours
Major Emphases
There are a number
of central ideas that you should be prepared to discuss at both the "problem solving" and
conceptual levels:
- Forces
and Free Body Diagrams:
Be prepared to discuss and use FBD's. This includes drawing them and setting
up subsequent equations of force. Since we have now inlcuded rotation and
torque - be prepared to also (when appropriate) include rotational terms.
THis also assume familiarity with vector notation and using vector notation
in setting up force equations.
- Energy and
Conservation
Make sure you understand how to calculate various forms that energy can take
as well understanding the use of work-energy theorem and conservation principles.
You should also review the idea of power and how this relates to
energy and work.
- Impulse
and Momentum:
Understand and be prepared to discuss momentum, impusle and the physics of
collisions. Be sure that you know how to combine both momentum and energy
concepts. Also - remember that these ideas come in linear and rotational "flavours!"
Exam Structure
The exam will consist of:
- a short answer
section covering all topics in the course
- 4 long answer
(multi-part) problems consisting of both a numerical and expository component.
You should plan on
spending about 20 minutes per problem.
You may use a small formula card.
