Introduction

The following lab is intended to give you practical experience with 2-D motion and to introduce the VideoLab. VideoLab is a powerful Applet produced by the MAP project that allows you to measure actual video footage of real-life events. The lab contains the same grapher controls that you have seen in other applets and is designed to enable you to gather data quickly and export it to EXCEL for follow-up analysis.

How to get Started

After a very brief tutorial on VideoLab, you are invited to select the following data set for analysis. Just click on the link below and the VideoLab applet will open in a separate window. Note - use NETSCAPE when running this applet.

What to Do

This lab is intended to be "group driven" - you should discuss how best to do the following:

• determine the acceleration of gravity implied by this data
• find the velocity (magnitude and direction) of the ball at launch
• prepare x-t and y-t graphs and fit the appropriate trendlines to these graphs
• explain the significance of the terms in your trendline equations

What to Hand In

This is not a full lab report. I would like the following from each lab group:

• neatly and appropriately labeled x-t and y-t graphs with accompanying trendlines and equations clearly shown
• calculation showing how you found the initial velocity of the ball
• the value that your group found for "g" , a brief discussion of how you determined this and an estimate for the percentage error in this result.
