Physics 243
Lab Challenge!

In today's lab you will face two tests of your acumen, prowess and skill as physicists! You will have 40 minutes to complete (including a very neatly hand written solution ) each of your tasks. To enhance precision you may want to pool your data but each of you is to hand in a solution. So... here they are:

  1. I will demonstrate a simple way to create resonance in a tube that is open on one end. Your task is to use the materials available to you to determine the speed of sound using this apparatus!

  2. On the front lab bench is a heap of stuff (I might even help you set it up a bit!). Your task is to devise a method to determine the linear mass density of the white string attached to the wave generator. You may need to get other equipment from the lab but you are absolutely NOT ALLOWED to weigh the string!!!

How you will be graded:

0 - 5 marks Explanation of how your method works and what you did. This will include all relevant equations and worked solution for each task.
0 - 5 marks

Demonstration that you were correct! You will be graded the following way:

  • within 5% = 5/5
  • within 10% = 4/5
  • within 20% = 3/5
  • within 30% = 2/5
  • within 50% = 1/5

You must complete the task and submit your solution before the "answer" is revealed.
