Date Due: Monday, October 18, 2016

The value of each question is shown.

  1. Calculate the kinetic energy of a proton moving with a velocity 0.95 (3 marks)
  2. An electron is accelerated through a potential difference if 1 MeV - how fast is it traveling after this? (3 marks)
  3. Show that 4-momentum transforms according to the expression . (6 marks)
  4. An x-ray of energy 1 MeV collides with a proton at rest and is scattered at an angle of 45o.Calculate the energy of the scattered photon as well as the kinetic energy of the proton. (6 marks)
  5. In the rocket frame of reference moving with a velocity b in the +x direction relative to a lab frame an object emits light uniformly in all directions. Show that the half of the light emitted in the forward direction in the rocket frame appears to be concentrated in a cone that makes an angle of . Show that if b = 0.99 the light will be concentrated in a cone making an angle of only 8.1 degrees. This is called the headlight effect. (8 marks)
  6. A subatomic particle of mass M at rest decays into a photon with an energy of (3/8)M moving in the +x direction and a second subatomic particle. What is the velocity v'(magnitude and direction) and the mass m of this second particle? (6 marks)
