Physics 300 Major Assignment #4

Each question is taken from the exercises and problems section of the corresponding chapter in your text (Knight) and is worth 6 marks.

Chapter 29: 44, 83

Chapter 30: 58, 83

Chapter 31: 58, 69

Chapter 33: 73,74

General Questions (10 marks each)

  1. From 1901-1915 the German physicist Walter Kaufmann conducted a series of experiments in which electron beams of varying energies were projected through magnetic fields. Reproduce the Kaufmann Experiment! Use the applet Particle in a Magnetic Field (2D) to "experiment" with an electron as it is accelerated through a increasing series of potentials. Provide a table in which you show the velocity, accelerating potential difference required and the effective mass of the electron. Graph the mass-velocity behaviour of the electron. What is "odd" about the results and how would you explain what is happening? You choose what magnetic field to use. Hint: do your analysis and data handing in EXCEL!

  2. Investigate how the magnetic field in a cyclotron can be adjusted radially to maintain synchronization with the particle and oscillating accelerating potential at the cyclotron "Dees". Use the applet Cyclotron and determine the maximum energy that a proton can acquire in a 1m radius cyclotron. Verify that the velocity shown by the applet is correct and develop an expression for the maximum energy that a cyclotron of radius "R" is capable of producing.
