Actually much more subtle than suspected for many years! In 1959 James Terrel
showed that, in fact, Lorentz contraction would not be observable - at least
not as a simple shortening of objects in the direction of motion.

The real effect would be a rotation
for simple objects at a large distance (subtending a small angle) and a distortion
for more complex shapes.
